(COMTEX) A: Dell Delivers SAN-In-A-Box A: Dell Delivers SAN-In-A-Box Feb 24, 1999 (Tech Web - CMP via COMTEX) -- Dell Computer's plan to sell its data-storage products via its direct reseller channel may actually present opportunities to data-storage resellers. The new storage area network (SAN) solution, which combines equipment from leading data storage hardware and software vendors, lets users attach up to four Windows NT-based servers to 900 gigabytes of disk storage. Although interoperability between products from multiple vendors has hampered rapid adoption of SANs to date, Dell has leveraged several recently unveiled SAN alliances to help with testing to ensure compatibility. Despite describing Dell's solution as "SAN-in-a-box" Dave Hill, a senior analyst at Boston-based researcher Aberdeen Group, said he expects many of Dell's customers to turn to resellers to help with configuration and installation. "When you get into SANs, you are getting into products which are hard to buy with the direct model," Hill said. "It's easy to get online and order a PC or a server. But when you're in an area where you have to configure, where you have to figure out how to do it, you need to talk to someone. And that's where resellers come in." And Hill expects that resellers probably will see the direct model become increasingly popular -- even for products as technically sophisticated as SANs. "Compaq and others are considering getting into that space," he said. "But it's a balancing act. They don't want to disturb their existing channel, but the Dell model is successful." Dell's Storage solution includes OpenManage Storage Consolidation Software, which was jointly developed with Microsoft and allows up to four PowerEdge servers to share external storage with one Dell PowerVault 650F storage system. Other products unveiled on Tuesday include, the 8-port PowerVault 50F Fibre Channel switch, the PowerVault 35F Fibre Channel multiport bridge for connecting SCSI-based tape libraries to Fibre Channel networks, and the PowerVault Fibre Channel optical host bus adapter to connect servers to the SAN or directly to external storage up to 500 meters away. For software, Dell has certified Computer Associates' Enterprise Library Option for ARCserveIT v. 6.6 for Windows NT and Seagate Software's Shared Storage Option for Backup Exec v. 7.2 for Windows NT. Dell expects that by next quarter, other software vendors, including Tivoli Systems, Veritas Software, and Legato Systems, will certify their enterprise-backup software with Dell's SAN products. The hardware components of Dell's SAN solution are provided by a variety of vendors. Clariion Advanced Storage Division of Data General supplies the Fibre Channel technology for Dell's 650F storage system. Crossroads Systems is the OEM supplier of the PowerVault 35F bridge. The host bus adapter used by Dell is supplied by QLogic. Dell's PowerVault 130T tape library is from Storage Technology. Brocade Communications Systems is supplying Dell with its SilkWorm family of Fibre Channel switches. -0- Copyright (C) 1999 CMP Media Inc. *** end of story ***
