Steve,

This is about market share and name recognition. They are dominating the SFA space. By giving away the CLIENT version for free they are hooking the customer who owns a small business into buying the SERVER license so they can link the rest of the company. What Siebel has done is say we are the Giant in SFA space, period. Think of all the new customers, Siebel customers, they will attract by giving the Client version away. The single version will be given away to MILLIONS of Compaq customers, once these people realize the value of SFA for small companies how many server licenses will be sold. Revenue is revenue. Does Microsoft sell personal as well as Enterprise level software? Can you possibly say that Microsoft should not be in the Enterprise software business because they started in PC software. In this business you either grow or die. One year ago Vantive and Siebel had similiar market caps, Siebel is going one way and Vantive another. You cannot compete without market share, how will Vantive compete with Siebel? It amazes me when you post about Vantive, it is clear to everyone except you that Siebel has positioned itself as the dominant force in this market.
