U S WEST Selects Nortel Networks DMS Service in Deal Valued up to US$40 Million

Nortel Networks' Solution to Provide Services for

Rocky Mountain Resort Community

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, NC, Feb. 25 /PRNewswire/ - The logistics of providing sophisticated, state-of-the-art communications to resort communities in the rugged terrain of the American Rocky Mountains is the challenge facing U S WEST Wireless, LLC, which will expand its existing high-quality Advanced PCS service into 10 new markets, including Salt Lake City, Utah.

Nortel Networks (NYSE: NT/TSE: NTL) is pleased to announce a three-year contract, valued up to US$40 million, to provide U S WEST Wireless, with Nortel Networks' DMS-100 switching system, the only integrated wireless/wireline switching platform currently available in the industry today. This Unified Networks solution from Nortel Networks systems will transparently integrate reliable, wireless connections with existing U S WEST wireline services. This solution will be deployed in other U S WEST territories, including Seattle.

We selected Nortel Networks' DMS offering because it is a cost-effective, reliable solution that can be easily integrated into our wireline and wireless network,'' said John Gonner, vice president, Engineering and Operations Engineering for U S WEST Wireless. ''In addition, the Nortel Networks DMS switch allows us to add sophisticated services to our portfolio of wireless services.''

Some of these U S WEST services include U S WEST's Secondary Dial Tone capability (patent pending) that enables a host of features such as Three-Way Calling, Call Transfer, and Call Forwarding.

The system also provides U S WEST a platform to offer additional unified services such as Nortel Network's Integrated Wireless Centrex, which is one of four components of the Nortel Networks Centrex Unlimited marketing program. This powerful solution set also includes Centrex IP, Centrex Voice Attendant, and the 1-Meg Modem. By seamlessly integrating a business' existing Centrex sites with branch offices, Centrex Unlimited offers telecommuters and other mobile professionals the ability to share the same secure, feature-rich, toll-quality communications network.

The DMS-100 digital platform integrates wireless and wireline functionality for a solution that offers capabilities such as feature transparency between wireless and wireline phones, and sharing of a common voice mailbox between a wireless and wireline phone. The DMS switch also addresses the changing economics of networking by allowing the switching costs to be spread between wireless and wireline applications without the addition of costly off board platforms, creating operational savings.

Since the first DMS-100 switching system with wireless capabilities was placed in service in late 1997, Nortel Networks has signed more than nine contracts with North American carriers for the Nortel Networks integrated wireless/wireline solution.
