I still believe they will continue to outpace the market to such an extent that they will challenge and potentially pass Compaq for the number one overall spot in US PC sales in 1999. This is based upon looking at the InfoBead's market estimates for PC sales for 1999. We expect that Dell, which grew US unit sales by 65% in 1998, will grow unit sales by "only" 44% in 1999. If such growth rates are produced Dell will establish a market share of 14.9% which exceeds our 1999 prediction for Compaq of 14.0%.

So, despite the perceived slowdown in the fourth quarter of 1998, our view is that Dell will continue to outpace the whole US market and will conclude 1999 as the US market share leader. Thus Dell's ride to the top is not over, but rather they are simply shifting into "cruise" control. Keep an eye on the InfoBeads Insider as we watch the first quarter results to see if Dell can challenge Compaq once again for the top spot in large businesses and perhaps the top spot over all....
