Not much disagreement - I should have been clearer: I think this is a necessary move for Amazon.com, the company but each new acquisition will make Amazon's position and prospects increasingly clear. DrugStore.com will benefit from the relationship with Amazon, both because of the reach Amazon extends to their site and the legitimacy and public awareness. The media just loves an Internet story and DrugStore is getting a bunch of free press. They have obviously listened to Bezos and have adopted similar tactics - "$10 off your first order at check-out". The same scheme that has so successfully ballooned Amazon's sales - wrap dollars around each sale ($5 for $4) and customers are sure to come in droves. I expect them to report "better than expected sales, it's going great, people are reaching their hands into our open cash register and taking out money . . . isn't Internet business wonderfull! hmmm . . time for us to sell off a few more hundred millions of inflated shares."

The trend is still down for the Internet and this is unlikely to change things that much. It was already expected but may continue to have some hype factor value. In the longer term, this and other deals will show Amazon for what it trully is, a growing business with prospects for razor thin margins at best.

What makes these deals beneficial in the short term to the stock price is that while it will help sales to grow now, the results of the strategy won't be clear for a year or two because speculators will continue to focus on sales growth.

The analysts are back in love with Amazon. A few have issued buy or strong buy recommendations. They like the fact that Amazon will grow sales at DrugStore.com, leveraging their customer base. On Seattle news reports, DrugStore.com was reported to be bogged down because of robust sales. Giving away $10 with the first order combined with well coordinated promotion and press coverage is doing the trick. Money for nothing.

The price action today was bullish - picking up momentum toward the close on healthy volume. The news and investment programs will keep buzzing about this for up to several days. With the buzz on the net being " . . . Have you heard, Amazon.DrugStore.com is giving away free money! Go over to their site and pick yours up!"

Despite negative trends in the TA of tech stocks, Amazon is likely to move up. Go with the flow.
