Randy, RE: The modem: It's my understanding that @Home has distributor agreements with suppliers on a geographic basis. For instance, Phoenix is LanCity whereas some areas in CA are Motorola cable modems. Of course if you can buy your own I bet you will get the standard disclaimer from @Home.....business is business, after all. RE: Content. Maybe your best bet would be to try it at a friend's place or at the local CompUSA that demos @Home. I really don't subscribe for any reason but the speed, but can imagine that the talent of Excite will make things more interesting content-wise for people who are looking for content. I have enjoyed the times I've gone to the @Home home page and found it easy enough to navigate.
