I believe it is the reverse. Place yourself in the position of the MM. Ask means he's asking that price to sell you the stock, Bid means he's bidding that price to buy it from you. That's why you buy at the ask and sell at the bid. So ask is positive, bid is negative.

Man, that sounds confusing.
