I got a tour today of Incyte's nearly completed new corporate headquarters, which is located directly next door to their current headquarters building in the Stanford Research Park in Palo Alto. This new expansion space for Incyte will put the bulk of the company in three contiguous buildings that form a very nice campus for them and allow them to pull out of some substandard, scattered, short term spaces they have been occupying. Plus, they got a very nice, under market rate, long term lease from their landlord, Stanford University. They have certainly put together a really nice facility design, tasteful but not ostentatious. This new building includes space for their executive and administrative staff, bioinformatics and software operations, sales, marketing and training facilities and some additional research lab space.

One of the issues that a fast growing company like Incyte faces in Silicon Valley, is the difficulty in obtaining good contiguous facility space. The result has been that over the last couple of years, Incyte has had to rely on a hodge-podge of short term facilities scattered throughout the area. As anyone who has tried to operate a company in fragmented spaces knows, this creates a loss of efficiency and effectiveness for the employees. The company misses out on the creativity that happens in a properly designed space that allows people to interact well. You also need to duplicate infrastructure and services, and you end up having to constantly shuffle and cram people in their working spaces. This new building will cure those ills. I really think it will make Incyte's staff more efficient and effective. In particular, the new customer training facilities will significantly improve Incyte's ability and capacity for training the users of their software systems. This is something that should improve their relations with their pharmaceutical company customers by making them more effective users of Incyte's services.

The Incyte executives have also kept the size of the executive offices small and reasonable, avoiding the big office ego trip that often happens in the valley. It is obvious that the real money in this building is being put into the infrastructure that counts, thus the bioinformatics computer systems area is impressive. They have put in the primary and backup utility systems that will ensure that their computer systems can remain online and servicing their customers regardless of external forces, always a concern in the storm and quake prone Bay Area. They also took steps to accommodate future growth. It was obvious that they really thought through what they needed to have to continue to grow and service their customers and to attract and retain first class talent. It looks to me like they have done a great job.
