I basically agree with all that you've said. I don't really want to apologize, though, for asking the questions which are exactly relevant to what I'm currently studying. Your answers provide for me (at least; probably others lurking here as well) a very, very important framework to pursue more in depth reading, chart analysis, etc.

Look at the quote at the top of this post. Here's an anecdote showing the inherent problem for a newbie: MSWin just gave me an error message when I tried a system test using optimization on *two* variables. Error message: Limit the optimization steps to less than 32,000 iterations.

Hey! And that's just looking at *two* variables!

The point is, folks, that some guidance can be a very useful thing.
