If only all analysts were as "inaccurate" as the MSDW guy! I'd have a lot more respect for them. Anyway, I read here that NOVL is projecting at least $0.50 for next year. This beats the MSDW expectation of $0.48. So may be all is not lost.

Where do you think all that volume came from today?
It came from the MSDW upgrade.....period.

For them to upgrade on the day of earnings release is pretty much saying that NOVL is going to blow away earnings. That's how most people read it.

Oh well, live and learn.

Novell 1st-Qtr Net More Than Doubles on Strong Sales (Update1)

Novell 1st-Qtr Net More Than Doubles on Strong Sales (Update1) (Adds details in 6th, 7th paragraphs; updates share price.)
Provo, Utah, Feb. 25 (Bloomberg) -- Novell Inc.'s fiscal first-quarter profit more than doubled as the No. 2 maker of software for computer networks sold more Internet-based products and benefited from a delay at rival Microsoft Corp.

Net income for the period ended Jan. 31 rose to $28.9 million, or 8 cents a share, from $14.1 million, or 4 cents, in the year-earlier period. Novell was expected to earn 9 cents, the average estimate of six analysts polled by First Call Corp. That estimate was raised from 8 cents on Monday.

Big companies are buying more of Novell's Netware 5.0 product, which includes so-called network-directory software that Microsoft doesn't yet offer for its Windows NT operating system. Novell has been battling Microsoft in the market for directory software, which lets companies manage networks more efficiently. ''Netware 5.0 has all the momentum right now,'' said Joel Achramowicz, an analyst at Preferred Capital Markets, who rates Novell ''strong buy.''

Revenue rose 13 percent to $285.8 million from $252.0 million a year ago. ''It's not the explosive growth some people were looking for, but they're on the right track,'' said Achramowicz, who expected the company to have about $290 million in revenue.

Chief Financial Officer Dennis Raney said in an interview that Novell got more than 80 percent of its revenue from directory-related products.

Provo, Utah-based Novell rose 1 7/8 to 20 7/8 in trading of 19.7 million shares, making it the fourth-most active stock in U.S. markets.

I think people are going to be surprised by what happens tomorrow. Disappointment is running through these on-line forums yet I'm looking at the nearest after-hours offer which is 20 3/4 as of 17:06, just an eighth off the high and close.

There could be other reasons for the move. It's possible the earnings was known and already discounted. But I would not be surprised to see a few analyst upgrades to buy or strong buy before the opening bell tomorrow.
