Re: GTE Worldwind Cable Modem and VDSL Services"It becomes most profitable for the MSO just as they reach saturation levels under which service quality deteriorates. It sounds like MSOs are using very short-term models of profit maximization to determine when to add capacity" Sam, Well it appears the good old free market system came to the rescue. My congestion just got so BAD on Time Warner's RoadRunner cable modem network that I gave up on them. I called GTE, and lo and behold, they got rid of their ridiculous broadband plans (the ones I tried a year ago) and matched RoadRunner service dollar for dollar. Too bad it took GTE one year to realize they needed to compete with RoadRunner. I bet they lost a lot of customers during that time. I made one heck of an effort a year ago to convince them. But ultimately the market spoke for me. Anyway I'm giving my Motorola Cybersurfer modem back to Time Warner and am now hooked up using Nortel's LanCity (if I'm not mistaken, Lancity-->Bay Networks -->Northern Telecom) cable modem and my connection to SI is as fast as you can blink your eye and click on "Next." What an improvement. I figured it was probably a RoadRunner problem. Time Warners quality, all around is just not that good. I'm sure lack of capital has a lot to do with it. BTW I found out some very interesting news from the tech that came out to hook up cable modem. Last month he personally did some installs of GTE's VDSL trials only a few blocks from where I live. He told me it was pretty amazing. Full TV video services(70 channels), phone service (with bells and whistles) and an Internet connection(he thinks it was 1 meg service), all via that little, teeny tiny twisted copper pair. He did the install, made sure it worked and then hasn't heard about the project since. He thinks there are bugs they are working on. But I was pretty amazed that it even worked, period. Maybe I have to re-think the xDSL plays? MikeM(From Florida)
