FORE Systems Delivers Unmatched IP+ATM Integration In Award-Winning ESX Switches With the ESX Fully Ready for Market, FORE Phases Out PowerHub Family PITTSBURGH, Feb. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- FORE Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: FORE - news), a leading global supplier of Application Aware(TM) networking solutions, today announced the availability of asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) uplinks for the ESX(TM) family of Application Aware multi-Gigabit routing switches. The new OC-12c (622 Mbps) ATM uplinks enable FORE's award-winning ESX-2400 and ESX-4800 routing switches to unlock the power of an ATM network core, providing unparalleled performance and predictability for business-critical networked applications. By integrating ATM uplinks, FORE dramatically enhances the functionality of FORE's ESX products, which have captured a growing share of the expanding Layer 3 modular switch market since their introduction late in the fourth quarter of calendar year 1998. ''With the new uplinks, FORE is delivering a breakthrough in IP/ATM and Gigabit Ethernet integration,'' said Donal Byrne, senior vice president corporate marketing at FORE Systems. ''The ESX routing switches, in combination with the ForeRunner® ASX(TM) backbone switches, will serve as the cornerstones of the best Application Aware networks.'' Best-in-Class Routing Switches Gain Best-in-Class ATM The ATM uplinks enable the ESX products to take advantage of the multiservice capabilities of FORE's core switching solution. Application agents on the ESX routing switches identify application flows and construct the policies required to deliver predictable performance via an ATM backbone. The ESX routing switches are capable of routing up to 38 million Internet Protocol (IP) packets per second, and feature up to 48 ports of Gigabit Ethernet, 384 ports of 10/100 and up to 16 load-balanced ports of OC-12c ATM. The switches are the first in the industry to embed Windows NT as an extensible network services platform with support for application agent or service agent plug-ins, providing capabilities such as Directory-Enabled Networking and wirespeed firewalling. ''With their unique switching architecture and new ATM uplinks, the ESX switches become an optimized switching platform providing unmatched support for transporting IP traffic over ATM and Ethernet,'' said Byrne. ''This innovative combination of intelligence and performance will provide today's networked business with the ability to achieve maximum benefit from mission-critical applications.'' Award-Winning Switches Capture Increasing Share of Exploding Market The worldwide market for modular Layer 3 Ethernet switches has grown dramatically over the past year, according to research conducted by Dell'Oro Group. Layer 3 modular switch revenue stood at $80.1 million worldwide in the first quarter of CY1998, ballooning to $221.6 million in the fourth quarter. With the introduction in late Q4CY1998 of FORE's second generation routing switches, the ESX line, FORE garnered a 5 percent share of the market in the fourth quarter of CY1998, according to Dell'Oro Group.
