AST Unveils Pentium III Powered Computers

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - AST Computer Thursday unveiled its new line of personal computers powered by Intel Corp. (Nasdaq:INTC - news)'s controversial new Pentium III processor.

Prices for the Bravo desktop fitted with a 450 megahertz Pentium III will start at $1,699, with the faster 500 megahertz version starting at $2,099, AST said.

The desktop computers come with either 96 or 128 megabytes of RAM (random access memory) and a hard drive capacity of 13 or 20 gigabytes, the Los Angeles-based company said. The machines can be ordered by telephone and would soon be offered through the company's Web site (www.ast.com), AST said.

Intel's processor has been embroiled in controversy because of a security feature that privacy groups say could threaten user privacy on the Internet. The chip includes a serial number that acts as an identification number for the computer.

Intel has said it will supply software enabling users to switch the feature off.
