Talk of Motorola upping NetSpeak stake - rpt
NEW YORK, Feb 25 (Reuters) - Communications and technology giant Motorola Inc. may expand its 32 percent stake in software module maker NetSpeak Corp. (Nasdaq:NSPK - news) or bid for the whole firm, BusinessWeek magazine reported, quoting investment experts.

Robert Goldman, of New York investment firm Josephthal, told the magazine's March 8 issue that he believed Motorola would have to eventually buy NetSpeak for its Internet technology.

Goldman was quoted in the Inside Wall Street column as saying that Motorola made the hardware and NetSpeak provided the software to deliver voice and data over cable modems.

An unnamed California money manager told BusinessWeek that now was the time for Motorola to make its move, citing NetSpeak's low stock price.

The company's stock on Thursday closed down $0.25 at $12.38, well off its year high of $33.13. The magazine said Motorola paid about $30 a share last year to boost its stake from 15 percent to 32 percent.

This may give us a little sympathetic boost.

Another important development: AudioCodes Introduces Industry's First 120 Port Compact-PCI VoIP Communications Board
New Product Enables Voice/Fax Packet Streaming of 1,680 Ports in a Single Hot-Swap Chassis for IP Telephony Gateways
SAN JOSE, Calif., Feb. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- AudioCodes, a leading provider of IP Telephony technology, will introduce the TrunkPack(TM)-VoIP/400-cPCI (the TP/400) at the upcoming CT Expo on March 1, in Los Angeles. The TP/400 is the industry's first 120 port compact-PCI board, providing a single-slot hot-swap voice packet streaming solution for carrier grade IP Telephony gateways. With 120 ports per board, multiple boards can be placed in a single chassis, enabling capacity to reach a T3 level. The TP/400 is the industry's first compact PCI board to offer such a high-density of ports, and creates the largest available IP Telephony open platform in the industry.

Compact-PCI is a new open telecom platform that is taking hold as the next VoIP industry standard, providing telecom-grade service requirements such as hot swap and NEBS compliance. AudioCodes' new standards-based board includes all voice-streaming functions required for IP Telephony gateways on-board: a quad-trunk PSTN interface, VoIP compression DSP's, a packet streaming processor, optional dual 100Base-T Ethernet interfaces and an optional independent call control processor.

''We have made a strategic decision to support the industry's move to the new compact-PCI architecture,'' said AudioCodes' marketing director, Oded Morag. ''By fully integrating these standards with our technology, AudioCodes ensures that we will continue to provide customers with the tools to create the most cutting edge IP Telephony products.''

The new board extends AudioCodes' successful TrunkPack series of communication boards to carrier grade applications. To date, AudioCodes has released three PCI-based members of the TrunkPack series of boards: TrunkPack(TM)-VoIP/04 - a four-port analog board for the enterprise market, TrunkPack(TM)-VoIP/100 - a 32 port voice streaming board, and the TrunkPack(TM)-VoIP/200 - a 60 port IP Telephony board with integrated PSTN interfaces.

''We are strong believers in AudioCodes,'' said Walter Snell, president of Mockingbird Networks -- Cupertino CA. ''The TP/400 is a key element to our strategy, and with it as part of our SS7 Solaris based platforms, we can deliver NEBS compliance, high availability and high density VoIP channels to our customers. AudioCodes has proven to be an excellent partner and they have provided outstanding support to us in the past.''

AudioCodes will be supplying the first boards to strategic partners in Q2 '99. General availability is expected in Q3 '99.
