Why doesn't someone build a modem that can handle any and all of the different pipes out there?

Hi WTC:

I was speaking broadly about regulation, not about specific
regulatory frameworks. It is also true some cities have
several competing cable companies. I agree that the FCC is
caught in a tangled web of outdated rules. However, since
cable companies will soon be offering phone service, and
phone companies have the potential to offer video service
(say through VDSL), not looking at them within a unified
regulatory approach is totally illogical based on pure
technological considerations. I would hate to see the
winners and losers arise of from FCC lobbying efforts,
instead of free competition. Realistically, the prognosis
does not look good, but we have come really a long way since
Ma Bell's breakup in the mid-80s.

Best regards,

Bernard Levy
