Here are my impressions on the various claims by DOJ against MS:

Regarding the browser, it needed to be integrated with Windows because the OS needed to evolve into a general depository of abstract objects located anywhere (local, LAN, or Internet)

I don't think it is fair MS has the leverage to basically set the fair market of value of its competitor's company in an essentially forced acquisition - which is what happens when MS tells a company they are going to place the sw in the OS.

Yet, the AOL-Netscape $4.5B deal shows the viability of the computer industry and actually goes counter to the argument above. So, MS could probably be saved by this dynamic, which is rather ironic for Netscape, who originated this claim with the FTC.

I think Gates' defiance against rigid rules creates a fabulous creative empowered work environment for software development, but this independent streak of defiance against authority also works against him with the DOJ.
