But Richard, size reduction will only increase dissolution. You have to understand that the concentration of the goodies in the molten phase is above the solubility limits for that temperature. The collector is used because the solubility limit of many of the goodies is very high (for gold, silver and palladium at least, I know that the respective diagrams are continuous, namely there are no solubility limits, I have not seen the phase diagrams for Cu-Pt and Cu-Rh, but my guess is that the limits of solubility if any are quite large.
