Who is Dick Lee?

Dick Lee has worked on the FSAAA Steering Team and has been posting here for quite some time. I think its time for the thread to know his capabilities, so Dick kindly gave me permission to post his resume. In his capacity as Chairman of our Steering Team, he certainly has impressed me with his determination and capabilities.

Dick Lee is a Principal of LeeVarage International, a firm which helps
technology based companies increase their value. LeeVarage has strategic alliances with other consulting companies including AVM Financial, Horizon Interactive, Inc., and The Innovation Strategy Group (ISG). AVM specializes in investment banking and MBO's for medium size companies, Horizon develops interactive internet and intranet sites, and ISG specializes in business strategy, value added growth and maximizing the value of technology to the business.

Lee is also President and CEO of Rocklite, Inc., a technology spin-out of Manville Corporation, and owner of an exclusive worldwide license to market and manufacture a lightweight wallboard product.

Lee has managed operating units of Fortune 500 Companies and led R&D organizations. He served as Vice President, Strategic Business Operations, Manville Corporation; Vice President R&D for Pharmaseal, a division of American Hospital Supply and subsequently Baxter Healthcare Corporation; Vice President, Onan Corporation and General Manager, Elgar Corporation ( McGraw Edison Corporation) and Vice President and General Manager, the Portable Battery Division of Gould Inc.

During his career, Lee has run two operating divisions of Fortune 500
companies. The primary goals for his first general management assignment at Gould Inc. were to improve the profitability of, and sell, the division. He led the division to become the second best within Gould for gross margin and operating income improvement and the unit was successfully sold to SAFT America. At McGraw Edison the directive was to reverse the rapid decline in orders and make the unit profitable. In the second year, the unit posted a record level for orders and the business was profitable.

At Pharmaseal, a $1 billion operating unit of American Hospital Supply, Lee headed the R&D group. For three successive years, gross margins from new products and process improvements per R&D employee was increased by over 100% per year.

Since 1992, Lee has led consulting projects for thirty clients including: Albany International, Ashland Chemical, Cargill, Ciba Corning Diagnostics, Ciba Geigy, ECC Inc., Exxon Research and Engineering, Great Lakes Chemical Corporation, Johns Manville, Johnson Controls, Kennametal, Millipore, Mobil Oil Corporation, Nanophase, Nycomed, Pacific Gas and Electric and Raychem.

The primary areas of focus for the consulting projects have been: bench marking, industry structure mapping, technology outsourcing, strategic technology planning, development of growth strategies, development of strategic business plans, key expert panels, voice of the customer and quality function deployment, project leader training/mentoring and "on the job" coaching, the development of custom stage gate project management systems, stage gate project management training and team building.

Lee was an Adjunct Professor teaching in the Masters of Technology Management program at University College, University of Denver from 1992-1995. He lectured on two subjects: "Public Policy and Regulatory Requirements in Technology Management" and "Strategies and Systems in R&D".

Lee was Chairman of the Organizing Committee for Summit 91, for which he authored a widely distributed 30-minute videotape entitled; US
Competitiveness: – a Crisis! – and then continued as a member of the Summit 92 organizing committee. Focused on improving US competitiveness, Summit 91 brought together leaders from industry, academia, government (HUD Secretary Jack Kemp), and other key players (Clyde Prestowitz, President of the Economic Strategy Institute, and Kent Hughes, President of the Council on Competitiveness).

Lee has been the keynote speaker on the subject of US. industrial
competitiveness for the following organizations: The National Business
Education Association, The Georgia Business Education Association, The Denver Rotary Club, The Lions Club of Denver, The Colorado Springs Rotary Club, The Metro North Chamber of Commerce and the Greeley Rotary Club.

Lee is the youngest Emeritus Member (in its history) and a past Member of the Board of Directors, Industrial Research Institute (1990-1992), is cited in Who's Who in America (1992 - present) and Who's Who Worldwide, and is a winner of an IR-100 Award (Zinc/Air Hearing Aid Button Cells).

Lee serves on the board of directors of QED, a $60 million, Denver based, value added distributor of electrical products and Kodiak, a start up company that has developed a web based, enterprise wide, closed loop control and accounting systems for parking lots.

He served as Vice Chairman of the Rocky Mountain World Trade Center; member of its Board of Directors and Executive Committee; Chairman of the Trade & Business Policy Committee, and led a group of volunteers that developed "An Export Growth Goal Plan for the State of Colorado".

He has a BS degree from the University of London and was awarded a Fulbright Travel Scholarship, he has an MS from Northwestern University, a Ph.D. in inorganic chemistry from the University of London, and completed the Mini MBA program at the College of St. Thomas.

Dick's talents can certainly be used to fixed FAMH's situation and I would support any role he can play.
