If my memory of past reports is correct, quite a large amount of the 22 million shares already bought have been bought recently. This makes me think that this stock is still weak - that most potential buyers are still waiting for positive proof of earnings before getting in. Our volume certainly did dry up quickly on this last rally.

I'm not an accountant either, but yes, shares outstanding decrease.
They're prorated according to when they're bought, so if they
repurchased 5.8 million shares right in the middle of this quarter,
that would reduce their shares outstanding by 2.9 million this
quarter and 5.8 million next quarter. Other things may cause shares
outstanding to increase, like option exercises or the ESPP.

Options count toward shares authorized, but not shares outstanding,
although they may be included in fully diluted shares (whenever the
company makes money again).
