Dow Jones Newswires
Energis, Viridian JV To Invest GBP20M Over 3 Yrs
Dow Jones Newswires

LONDON -- Energis PLC (ENGSY) said Wednesday the joint venture it's setting up with Viridian Group PLC (U.VRD) in Northern Ireland will invest GBP20 million over three years and create 200 jobs.

Energis outlined the investment plans in a statement that followed a release from the company earlier Wednesday confirming it was in talks with Viridian.

Energis is the telecommunications unit of National Grid PLC (U.NGR).

Energis said the joint venture will build a major telecommunications network and launch services in Northern Ireland, focusing initially on the business and government telecom market.

The network initially will cover greater Belfast, though services will be offered throughout Northern Ireland. The service launch will be in the latter half of 1999, Energis said.

The company said it is estimated that the total business and government telecom market in Northern Ireland is worth more than GBP250 million a year, with substantial growth forecast in advanced data and Internet services.
