Your summary is right on point

Intel has got a real corporate image problem now and it is starting to hurt them with buyers of PC's. They were completely wrong about the computer ID and didn't listen to what was going on in Washington with Microsoft.

Once having an Intel microprocessor inside was a guarantee of quality. Now it means you've let Big Brother's inside your home to wiretap all of your internet browsing.

Do Intel engineers really think people are that stupid and will put up with that much s..t?

That's true (for the visible ones), but they are also fighting a tough battle.
