edamo: Good points, I agree that ..<< the seed came from Demming in the post war era...a simple but misunderstood concept... >>My father and I had a chance to hear Demming speak up in Michigan a few months before his death. He was a visionary and very sharp right up into his 90s. IMHO, Michael and his team have taken many of Demming's concepts and made them very appropriate and efficient to use in the information age.

I agree that DELL's competitors don't have the TOTAL commitment to adopt the complete virtual integration model. They also IMO do not have the culture to support this kind of effort. These "soft issues" are essential to remember. Michael appreciates the importance of employee buy-in and support for radical new ways of doing things. He has created what Demming and the Japanese might call a culture filled with a need for Kaisen -- or Constant and Never Ending Improvement. This, IMHO is DELL's secret weapon and is VERY, VERY tough to replicate.
