MS-DOJ judge shouts down Microsoft exec zdnet.com

Here's the full story.

WASHINGTON -- Judge Thomas Penfield Jackson shouted down Microsoft Senior Vice President Robert Muglia Friday after the executive began bickering with the judge over what Jackson said was an unambiguous e-mail message placed before the witness.

In a May, 1997, e-mail to senior staff, Gates wrote he was "hardcore about NOT supporting" the latest version of Sun Microsystems Inc.'s Java programming technology.

Since Microsoft stands accused of illegally trying to kill off Java along with Netscape Communications Corp.'s ) Navigator browser, lead government attorney David Boies asked Muglia to explain how he could claim otherwise, given Gates' apparent animosity towards Java.

Muglia explained that Boies had simply misinterpreted the e-mail, then launched into a lengthy exposition denying the government's interpretation of words such as "hardcore" and "support." In any case, he said, Gates had told him otherwise since the e-mail was written.

Jackson interrupted.

"I read it as saying he doesn't like the idea of supporting it," he said. "I don't think it can be read in any other way. Maybe he's changed his mind, but that's what he's saying here. Let's not argue about it."

Muglia continued to press his point.

"No!" Jackson thundered. "Stop! There is no question pending. When the time comes for your counsel, you can redirect." With that, Jackson called an unexpected, 10-minute break.

I was wrong in my previous interpretation, obviously. What Bill meant was, he didn't want to support Java with hardcore porn, a soft-core ad campaign is all that could pass muster in this family values era. Or maybe he didn't want to give hard cash to sweatshop workers in Indonesia. Anyway, has anybody heard of f***ing Windows? Windows seems pretty hardcore to me, in the integrity and uniformity sense anyway. It's obscene! Dirty Windows! Where's the Windex?

Cheers, Dan.
