I knew you'd say that. But yet I think you know that you can "order" a car built "to specs" with each and every option you want. The dealer provides no added value except to act as the conduit to allow you to drive a couple miles to the dealer, sign the papers, sip the coffee, and accept the keys. So while GM may technically be a "wholesaler", they design their cars to please the end user, not the dealer. They use dealers to move their stuff to the consumer, just like many many businesses. (of course, the after-sale service/support is probably the most valuable service provided by the dealer to the end user--I'm not by any means advocating driving to Detroit to buy a car--And I presume that GM values the local hands-on knowledge each dealer provides for his/her local geographic niche).

And in fact, ever been to GM's web site? It's end user-centric, not dealer-centric. When you register with GM's site, they will directly notify you (yes you, the consumer) of any recalls, immediately.

GM is not a retailer!

Agreed! They are a manufacturer. So why do so many people compare AMZN to DELL or MSFT?
