Reseller,

Regarding my comments about, at least for the time being, not taking much notice of the what is offered as built-in at mass retailers let me just as this thought. These chain stores are looking for brand recognition and margin on boxes being sold at the retail level. The manufacturers are going to build the "cheapest" box that will allow them to make a profit and allow the reseller to make a profit...this is what sets them apart from the Dell model. If it is cheaper to include LS-120 at the manufacturing level and their customers don't care or know what they are getting, than that is what they will do.

With KP and the Rockys it is o.k. if IMN gives their drives away at a loss, but heaven forbid that IOM should sell at a lower margin, let alone at a loss. It is clear that IMN is attempting to build market share by dumping product...the Syquest model...a desperate measure that cannot be sustained very long.

The proof as to what the consumer wants...when they are given a choice...is the shelf space given to components (drives, disks, etc.)for the person constructing the system of their choice....IOM is still the big winner here from my informal channel checks.

It is sort of a Pepsi vs. Coke thing. You buy a box lunch and it comes with Pepsi you will drink it. You buy a sandwich of your choice and a beverage, you select Coke. Similarly Pepsi fights for shelf space by lowering prices, works for awhile (of course margins go down), but Coke always prevails, because Coke is cola....Zip is removable storage!
