Michael and all,

From the Asia front, (Not sure if it was the same deal someone posted earlier)

February 26, 1999 (SEOUL) -- Korea's CDMA (code division multiple access) mobile-phone system developers will collaborate on technology development and the export of products.
Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. will supply CDMA system blueprints and related facilities to Hutchison Telecom Ltd., an Australian telecommunications firm. Hutchison Telecom expects to install a mobile-phone service system in Sydney and Melbourne, industry watchers said.

Another three Korean telecom firms also will join the Hutchison project. KT Freetel and Hansol PCS Co., Ltd., two major PCS service providers in Korea, will take full responsibility for developing base stations and facilities management, while Seoul Telecom will construct a mobile-phone service system.

Hutchison Telecom selected Hansol PCS as its business partner for network design. Already, Hansol PCS has dispatched 11 experts to Australia to work on the CDMA system.

"This deal may help the company make inroads in the global mobile-phone market," a Hansol PCS official said.

Samsung Electronics earlier signed a contract worth US$215 million with the same Australia-based telecom firm for supplying CDMA systems along with 497 base stations and four units of switching equipment.

Thread,

Old news if posted before, sorry!,

February 3, 1999 (SEOUL) -- With more foreign countries adopting code division multiple access technology in their mobile phone systems, major Korean CDMA makers expect higher sales this year.
Compared with the US$924-million export total in the past three years, global demand for Korean CDMA hand sets and systems will probably reach US$1.5 billion, forecasted industry watchers.

Experts based their prospects on an increasing number of CDMA-adapting countries, which totals 35 nations so far.

In the Asia-Pacific region, Japan, Hong Kong, Thailand and Singapore have already subscribed to CDMA technology, while the Philippines and Bangladesh are in the process of launching the technology.

China also is emerging as a huge market for CDMA systems and mobile phones. The country recently started a trial service for CDMA mobile phones.

In the Americas, Mexico and Dominica are currently launching a CDMA system following Canada and Guatemala, while South American nations, including Argentina, Brazil and Chile, are developing the system at the moment.

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. Korea's leading CDMA hand set maker, is in third place globally.
