Proxy/NAT/firewall for cable modem?

Here's one of those questions that's probably been asked dozens of times before. I need a high level answer pointing me in the right direction, if you please.

Cable modems have finally arrived in my neighborhood. (advertised anyway) But I'm not going to sign up until I'm satisfied that I have reasonable security in place. I have several PCs hooked up on 10baseT Ethernet. My objectives -

1.) I want to be able to get to the Internet from any of 3 or 4 PCs running Win95/Win98/Win NT.

2.) I don't want anyone from the Internet to be able to get to any of my systems.

I have a PC that could be dedicated to acting as a firewall. What software & OS should I run to make this work? I'm willing to learn Linux if the experts recommend that route. Or I can use NT WS or Server. I wonder if Netware - Intranetware could do the job? ( I used to be a Netware geekette and I'm passibly proficient with NT and TCP/IP stuff.)

BTW, If I have to spend money to make this work I'd rather spend it on software than on hardware.

Thanks,
CL

"We can not expect everyone to read five hundred or more posts before posting to a thread. The SI search engine is helpful but could use some improvement. I was able to search back to the beginning of a thread a couple of months ago. Now the limitation seems to be 120 days again."

Sorry I never learned to do that italics thing. I've been away from SI, trading, and all for several months. Remembered this was the place to come for what I need. Knowing how hard Zeuspaul has worked on this thread, I took comfort in his statement. If someone could point me to a good source for the basics of setting up a home network I would appreciate it. Also, my local telephone company is offering free ISDN installation if I will buy a router from them, at about the cost of the ISDN installation. Should I jump on this??

>>If I could figure out a way to index with less labor I would try to reestablish the index. I need to put some more effort into Excel. I believe it may hold a possible answer.

I love a good mystery. Why Excel? For sorting? How do you get
the text in? pick topics?
