Jim - Re: " OK, there we have it -the AMD K6-III processors tested and reviewed. For what it's worth, this CPU is really not what all the hype was all about, in which area it matches the performance of the Pentium III quite well. In terms of actual CPU performance, the K6-III is not faster than the Pentium III but in overall terms can be considered a viable upgrade option for the Pentium II processor. Then there is the ever-present problem of 3DNow! support. Considering the $284 price tag of the AMD K6-III 400, this processor is a very good choice indeed for a user planning to assemble a PC from scratch. Besides, if you can get this thing up to 450MHz it's going to be quite worth the time and the money. I do feel that the price gap is a little too much for the K6-III 450, but on the other hand it is still a lot cheaper than a Pentium II 450 or a Pentium III 450. If you're prepared for overclocking “at your own risk”, the K6-III 450 -due for release a couple of weeks after the release of the 400MHz version- is a pretty tough customer at 500MHz. As for those of you who already own a K6-2, the K6-III may not be all that you expected. I recommend you hang on to your current processor and upgrade at a later date. If the K7, due in the second half of this year, fulfils expectations it will definitely be worth the wait. Meanwhile, we can expect Intel to be very aggressive on pricing -something AMD cannot afford to do with their limited production capacity. New Celerons are expected at speeds of 433MHz and 466MHz, while the Pentium II 450 would also be a good buy if Intel decides to cut prices to a comfortable level. What's more (and this one must really be a thorn in the side of AMD) Intel has managed to hit 1GHz with the 0.18 micron Pentium III. The road ahead is sure to be a bumpy ride for all concerned -one thing's for sure and that is that the immediate future is going to be very interesting. And as always, more competition means better pricing- so don't fall for hype and regret your purchase later. As with the Pentium III, my recommendation is- Wait. Do not rush into this. It helps to wait. And there is no doubt- we definitely have a lot to wait for." Thanks for that article. Everybody is beginning to realize:For what it's worth, this CPU is really not what all the hype was all about . Paul
