I use a combined telecom/internet stock approach to investing in this realm. I'm interested in companies that are gathering subscribers and supplying them with cable/internet/phone service. The small ones stand a good chance of being acquired by the likes of AT&T or MCI, because they have access to customers that the big guys need to expand their networks. My favorite is RCNC---a nice growth stock for the past several months. Got in at 22 and have seen it go as high as 27. Unfortunately, it dropped really low in the past few days of panicky sell-off trading, but it's a good time to get in around 23-24. Interestingly, WCOM has been my best performing stock and they have internet activities going on, too.

Meanwhile, if the Internet will continue to be such a big deal, why is everybody concerned about falling profits for computer-makers and computer-sellers? You can't get on the Internet without a computer, you will need faster/better computers to take advantage of everything on the Internet, so people will continue to replace older machines. It's the same principle behind buying CSCO. I'd rather own the Internet machinery than own one of the websites.
