Monty, One time charges are one of the big scams of this bubble. The Economist did a study about one-time charges on eps of American corporations a year or two ago. It was pretty gruesome. Wish they'd update it.

Of course these cos. wouldn't do anything that sneaky. What you are referring to is what Compaq calls "clearing the DEC." <g>

Don't give GE any medals. They may not use this scam, but they use another that is just as phony: taking cap gains in insurance subsidiaries to pad eps when the quarter looks light. However, this only works in up markets, which means that Welch will not be nearly as brilliant in a down market. <g>
