Mindmeld - I just finished reading a very well written article entitled "Fast Forward - Future Internet" in the March edition of PC World Magazine. The article makes a very interesting point. Right now, the bottleneck in the internet is in the last mile - between the ISP and the desktop. Until this bottleneck is corrected by cable modem or DSL, the cost of competing technologies like T-1 or ISDN, will act to slow down the expansion of the internet. How many core switches is Cisco or Ascend going to sell when the end user cannot get high speed access at a reasonable cost? When the last mile problem is solved, the expansion of the internet will really explode. "As cable and DSL roll out, ISPs and backbone providers will have to speed up their segments to accomodate the new traffic." IMO, 1999 and 2000 will see the rollout of cable modem access and DSL. Once that acquires critical mass, we can expect to see Cisco, Nortel and Lucent all share in large equipment sales to ISPs and backbone providers.

I raise this point because I think the point has been missed by all the discussion on these threads about Cisco v. Lucent or Nortel etc.
