Mary, I used to have the same problems with my cable modem. Then my service provider switched to @Home and I've experienced very few slowdowns.

I also have cable modem (mediaone.net)which is great. I installed a second network card in the primary computer and network cards in my other trading computers. Hooked everything up to a small 5 port hub and downloaded some inexpensive network software. Now we can access the internet from each computer individually. If you pursue this course, make sure you use passwords for file sharing or the rest of the city will have access to your hard drive. You don't have to worry if you dont file share between your computers.
