Jim, see the future...one day the device known as the computer will be as ubiquitous as the telephone. Billions upon billions of connected computers will run the planet. Intel with it's billions of dollars in cash will be there supporting that HUGE appetite with speed and production capability second to none.

AMD will be bought out by some other alliance attempting to compete with Intel. Intel will never abandon the low end CPU. They will simply leverage the high end to crush one competitor after another. Why would they get out of an entire sector and allow a potential competitor to rise for the future? It doesn't make sense from a business perspective. They are the ones with the Billions! They could even take huge losses in the low end and drive AMD under in less than 2 years if they chose. When you have the FAB capacity and billions that Intel has, making a few million more low end chips is just good cycle time practice. :-)

Instead (and in order to keep the justice department off it's back) Intel allows AMD to make a couple of bucks for a few quarter and then they jerk the chain and up the ante'. It's a cycle that has been repeating itself for quite sometime.

I would be willing to bet hidden away in Intel R&D labs are chips with speeds and performance which would astound us.
