Actually, I'm an ex-employee, and I think they had excellent pay and benefits. They also treated the employees better then the company I now work for. I moved on after 3 years only because Intel doesn't have a Fab in Florida. Oregon was just too far from home. They treated me well when I got hired and even when I "voluntarily separated."

I wasn't a "creative engineer," so I don't know about this "within the box" stuff. They did make me work "within the bunny suit." :-)
I know the engineers didn't start out at much money, but maybe they enjoyed working for the best. Kind of like a baseball player wanting to get traded to a world series contender.
