Just kidding.
The profit margin on the big OEM deals are probably negligible at best. The Corel/Compaq deal didn't ignite Corel's bottom line all by itself either. These deals add some prestige and promote "Corel", "CorelDraw!" and "WordPerfect" name recognition. IMHO they are probably done at "give away" prices.
Corel Announces Bundling Deal with Compaq
corel.com
Ottawa, Canada— April 6, 1998— Corel Corporation announced today that Compaq has begun bundling Corel's award-winning Corel® WordPerfect® Suite 8 software on three Compaq Presario PC models sold in Radio Shack stores across the United States.
..."This deal fits well with Corel's mission statement – to focus our technology leadership to offer customers value, compatibility and choice," said Don Sylvester, senior vice president of Sales at Corel Corporation. "It's also consistent with our 1998 sales strategy to focus on products in retail and key corporate markets."

"to offer customers value, compatibility and choice,"
Is probably the whole point of the deal for Gateway too.
