So it sounds as if an astute PC manufacturer (i.e. Compaq) would make a contract such that after the first year [the free internet access for the CPQ PC buyer], the PC manufacturer would get payment from the IP for some negotiated period for people who stayed with the IP after the free year. This would help the PC manufacturer keep costs of the free offer down and would help the IP get--then keep--customers.

NW, your comment about sticking with AOL because of your e-mail address holds true for many people, no matter what IP they use. It is more likely for a person to think twice before changing their IP after one (free) year than after a 100 free hour offer (for the first month).
