Nice post from y* thread about G* vs. I* Top > Business and Finance > Stocks > Services > Communications Services > GSTRF (Globalstar Telecommun.) Agvantage G*! by: MICRO_TIME 4491 of 4544 1. No complex intersatellite links or onboard call processing (a la Iridium). Call Processing and switching operations take place in the Gateway, which is assessible for maintenance and can benefit from continuing technological advances. 2. QCOM's CDMA technology is available to G* on an exclusive basis. This is a digital technology which allows superior clarity, quality and privacy. 3. Signal path diversity is a patented SS/L method of signal reception not available to ICO and Iridium. The potential for blockage from buildings, terrain or other natural features is small. 4. G* phones will cost less than $750 and providers will be charged around $0.35 per minute. (Go Iridium... yeah right!) 5. G* phones can operate with a single satellite overhead, although typically 2-4 staellites will be overhead. This means that a loss of a single satellite will not result in gaps in coverage (al la ICO - ouch!) or systems without the path diversity feature (Go Iridium! - uh uh). to be continued ... Advantage G* ... Part II by: MICRO_TIME 4492 of 4544 1. Each G* satellite will provide 16 spot spot beams, which will generate coverage cells on the surface for links between users and the Gateways. Each satellite's area will cover ten million square miles, an area larger than China or the United States! (This is no Iridium!) Each spot beam will cover 600 000 square miles, an area larger than any state in the United States or any country in Western Euorpe! 2. A single gateway can provide fixed coverage over an area larger than Saudi Arabia and mobile coverage over an area the size of Euorpe. 3. MEO systems (ICO) will have a noticeable delay and will be prone to outages due to single satellite malfunction (hey but it's just the third world - they'll get used to it!). Iridium has to decode, recode, perform echo cancellation and otherwise process signals in space and perform satellite-to-satellite linkages with additional onboard processing at each step. (For upgrades and maintenance you lasso the sucker and pin its wings for easy access). It doesn't feel like it right now but all of this gloom and doom is actually good for G*. Iridium's trouble's and G*'s Zenit fiasco have actually raised the barriers to entry. G* won't have to share precious bandwidth for some time to come (ICO is actually on a different frequency band). But what the hell, if DoDo says it won't work: Loral 42% stake Vodafone 7.5% (before ATI acquisition) Qualcom 6.5% Bass 5.9% (increased to 10%+ I believe during Fall sale) Soros Funds 4% China Telecom 1.6% and one more thing, if the media makes any more negative comments I'm a selling, do ya hear me, I say I'm a selling, boy!
