Top of the mornin' hio: And thanks again. We have already seen how those e-commerce sites which have had their COMPAQ licnece rescinded intend to continue selling from inventory and from other sources. It seems that COMPAQ.com is also continuing sales to the chagrin of this analyst, who otherwise approves of COMPAQ's actions. I think cpq is right to continue.

"Compaq was wise in yanking the authorization of its soon-to-be subsidiary, Shopping.com, but it made a basic error of omission by not ceasing sales on its Compaq-branded sales site. That would have been a clear signal that its intentions went fully beyond punishment for pricing infractions. (It's not too late to suspend sales at Compaq.com until such time as the Internet channel is fully
evaluated.)"

Good article, but I really do not understand what this fellow is thinking with the following paragraph:

[quote begin]
Compaq was wise in yanking the authorization of its soon-to-be subsidiary,
Shopping.com, but it made a basic error of omission by not ceasing sales on
its Compaq-branded sales site. That would have been a clear signal that its
intentions went fully beyond punishment for pricing infractions. (It's not too late
to suspend sales at Compaq.com until such time as the Internet channel is fully
evaluated.)
[quote end]

Why? For what reason(s) would CPQ shut-down its own internet-based store? It's not like products at the CPQ site are obtained by CPQ through independent distributors. I wish the fellow who wrote the article had spent more time explaining what he meant because his reasons for stating this are not clear to me.

The gentleman writing this article hated to see the automobile put the buggy whip makers out of business. Plus who is pulling who's chain? Don't the brick and motor stores like CompUSA have Internet sites to do Etailer business? This whole thing is more about keeping fat margins for the channel then about the future. I wonder if the channel feels bad about making businesses more efficient by replacing people with computers. That was the big selling point for PCs. I bet the VARs go to bed every night and feel bad about all the secretaries, and telephone receptionists that have been replaced by their services. Now they are crying foul when the computer might replace them. Sort of ironic isn't it. You bunch of cry babies need to figure out how to make it work for you. Stop fighting progress. You are not going to be able to stop it.
