It sounds like they deliberately "lost" your records to allow the one years to run out and avoid being sued. They knew before you did that they were liable.

That's a shame, you really had some grounds. In Illinois we have a ton of shysters getting rich suing over nothing. I had a broken arm and a lawyer told me a cast was worth an automatic $10,000 in malpractice even if it was done right. That's crazy.
