Well no. What do you mean by proprietary? If you think that Xfree86 and X in general or GNOME or Berlin is so far a solution then I would like to know a solution to what? Hard drives that need filling? I mean simply that end users (non programmers) are no longer going to pony up for their machine's OS/GUI. Assuming you could create a GUI that out windows Windows, nobody would pay you money to license it. Those days are gone. See - this is why you need me on the board, E. :) X sucks, but X exists. X puts the 'X' back into existential. The beauty of X is that it sucks independently of the OS. More and more end users and networks will be in need of remote admin (servicing). Remember my mother-in-law, far, far, far, away? That's the trend. That, and FREE code. and it did not do networks. Breathtaking bullshit. Great stuff with all kinds of roadblocks. Kind of like a beautiful deserted city. I'm seeing a BOOK in all of this. That was a great line. You can till charge for code and do it right. You can open the API and cater to people who want to use the code for real programming and real system usage. That will always require consultation. But I stand by my assertion. Linux does not have desktop. It has no drivers for output to hardcopy worth mentioning. Its windowing interface is not 21st century and the programming world knows it. The monolithic programming world is shrinking. What's the best selling programming book at Amazon.com? Programming Perl, (typically top 1-200). I have the strong feeling that MSFT APIs are within a short time of becoming published, by decree, or otherwise. The WINE project, with the help of those nutty Canadian reverse engineering enthusiasts at Corel, will then likely become fully realized in short order. Then, we can run all of our Crapware stuff on X! We'll get the mediocrity of both worlds. Blended absurdity. A perfect solution. Something to service. :) -JCJ
