Here is a link to the article entitled "Fast Forward: Future Internet" in the March edition of PC World Magazine - a very well written article. This is an especially good article for non-techies. I recommend it highly.

Gord, Your prediction is a possibility, but

I think I will look toward improved battery technology (driven by the laptop and cell phone markets) and larger scale integration of the parts of the customer transceiver (what used to be the telephone). Batteries that do well in premium laptops need to get much cheaper to fit into the design of the customer transceiver, but the performance requirements are already met. The other way to solve the problem -- reduce the current drain, gets attacked all the time with new ICs. The tough order is reducing drain on high bandwidth devices, especially if there is an RF carrier involved (e.g., a cable modem, but the DMT premises cards would made pretty good foot warmers, too.) If these initiatives can be successful, the most challenging lifeline technology problem is largely mooted by technology advances -- advances available to every service provider -- ILEC, CLEC, and MSO.
