"But I am baffled why you'd want a job at some faceless corporation that lacks the high ethical and creative values you put such store in."

But that is what I do. I walk into those places, the GE, Tenneco, whatever, and change the nature of the way people work, contribute, grow, learn, share. I evolve those companies so that they approach what they are doing and how and when and why and where to a level that they did not they were capable of. I establish the requirement for honesty and ethical behavior and ownership, at all levels. I help them evolve in a way that they at first don't understand, to the point that they own it and believe in it and become intrinsic to what they become.

I can't change the world. But I firmly believe, from experience, that one can chage their corner of it. And all those people I have touched carry that forward in their careers, their expectations, their goals.

There are people on SI I have known for years now, who I think have changed in some small way from our association, as I have grown myself. We don't tolerate spamming here, but we aren't cruel about it either. We aren't perfect, but we are not afraid to admit mistakes - we know that forgiveness comes frowm ourselves, and not the opinion of our peers. We don't have to always be right or successful or even always here to be respected, supported, valued. We arethat way because we all collectively insist upon it now. Alien can be cynical or off-handedly complimentary and it doesn't dimish our respect for him. He can be right or wrong and we still honor his right to be here and learn and teach us all. Jay can be the master of the gaps and Dave the shorts and Alien the options and everyone can take that or leave it and still be part of whatever it is we are. Lurkers can stay unspoken for years and still be part of us. We all find our own comfort level here being what we are and yet still grow and learn. And no one has to be right or perfect or anything less than a whole person - with all the strengths and weaknesses that includes.

We didn't come to this forum that way. With some subtle and some not so subtle posts we evolved to this. And I could leave this and it would still be what it is. My contribution was to start it, and to be me. In a corporation, I do that at different levels, usually wrapped around some technology advance, or some disaster or some undefined need. But in the end it is always the people who remain, but now with the skills to slay their own next dragon. And my contribution seems somehow nebulous and unheralded. The way it should be. Because in the beginning there is one keeper of the faith, one madman/visionary/zealot/radical...one new guy who is usually described as 'different'.

And in the end there is "We". What we did. What we became. What we have the confidence to now become. Thats what I do.
