CHINA THREATENS THE U.S. WITH A NEW ARMS RACE IF SON OF STAR WARS PROGRAM PROCEEDSFebruary 28, 1999 The Electronic Telegraph reported today from London that China warned the U.S. the day before Secretary of State Albright's visit to Beijing that if America continues with its plans for the so called "Son of Star Wars" program to develop a satellite-based defense shield capable of shooting down incoming missiles, a new arms race will follow. The report said that China has been angered by the American plan and said that if the U.S. goes forward with the project "it could lead to a proliferation of sophisticated missiles across the Asia Pacific region." The Telegraph reported that Albrights trip to the Chinese capital has been slated "to improve poor Sino-American relations before a visit to Washington in April by Zhu Rongji, the Chinese prime minister."
