Leif, if GSM has comfortable capacity margins, why are Europe and Chinese providers using both 900Mhz and 1900Mhz with dual-band phones?

Our local GSM provider is giving away Ericy 788 handsets with the headset for a $20 donation to Ronald McDonald's charities. But, you have to sign a binding service contract for two years.

My CDMAOne service with SprintPCS is $50 for 500 peak minutes a month (Christmas season promotion). If Sprint didn't have enough capacity, large calling plans would cause blocked calls and unhappy customers.

While I have only been a customer for three months, I have never had a blocked call despite living five miles from Qualcomm (if that doesn't pack five to ten thousand of their phones into a small area, what will?)

Lets compare GSM service plans...

$70 a month for 400 peak minutes on PacBell GSM.
$70 on SprintPCS gets you 600 peak minutes.
Past the 400 GSM minutes, its $0.25 a minute. If I dump 600 prime-time minutes on that GSM calling plan, my GSM bill for that month will be $120.

To make matters worse, PacBell limits its free long distance to Nevada and California(where I live). Sprint doesn't charge me extra long-distance for calls made anywhere in the US plus some cities across the border in Mexico (with Pegaso PCS).

Here are the GSM phone models offered: pbwireless.com

I am comfortable with the fact my Qualcomm phone doesn't work in Europe. I am part of the majority that doesn't travel outside of the US.

My main objection to Caxton's posts as well as to those of several other members of the Qualcomm gang is that he seems to have an interest only in promoting Qualcomm stock. This is is fine, only don't do it on the Ericsson thread. The Q gang has done the same to Nokia.
