Dan,

you need the second nic when using a cable modem or ADSL as your PC communicates with the modem via ethernet. They have no serial connection as with a external ISDN or internal ISDN PA.

you use the assigned IP address from your provider on one and a bogus subnet like 192.168.0.0 with class b subnet.

And I have to make a third recommendation on Sygate. I use it at home for a small internet sharing network, and a few people use it at work as well on their own mini-lan.

The ease of the setup is one bonus. Another bonus, is that they continuously update it. Even if you don't use it, take a look at their site and the info they got there.
