>>Am I mis-interpreting the news? << Dont know :> Depends if you think INTC will lie or not. Will MSFT lie to you? How about the IRS or Slick Willy.. Intel introduces a new feature in the Intel® Pentium® III processor that can help IT professionals better manage PCs, control access to information, and enhance security. Called the Processor Serial Number, this new feature provides an additional level of user identification over the user name and password protections employed in most companies. The processor serial number provides a building block that can improve the security of transactions over the Internet and the connected enterprise. The Intel processor serial number feature is embedded into the chip during the manufacturing process of the Pentium III processor. The processor serial number found in the Pentium III processor, when combined with other identifiers such as passwords and user names, provides an added level of security confidence. But the processor serial number can do more than just enhance security. IT departments can deploy applications that use the processor serial number for asset tracking, system inventory, document control, firewall security, and content management. For business IT, Intel processor serial number can provide the following benefits: Security Managed access to new Internet content and services Network intruder detection (intranet or Internet) Manageability Asset management Configuration management and initial system load Information Management Information filtering and targeting by machine “Personalized” machines and removable drives Intel will also provide a control utility application that lets users or IT departments turn off the processor serial number feature. This utility enables users can to turn on the processor serial number feature from the default "off" setting, disable it on an as-needed basis, or disable it permanently. While corporate IT departments particularly see the value of processor serial number for asset tracking and systems management, Intel recognizes that processor serial number also raises privacy concerns and is working to make sure those concerns are addressed-particularly with consumers. Intel has taken these steps to ensure that the user retains full control over use of the feature: Hardware designed into the processor allows software to turn off the processor serial number An Intel-developed control utility allows users to turn reporting of the processor serial number on or off as needed. The default setting is off. Intel is working on software and educational materials to help Web developers and hosting sites access and use the processor serial number in responsible ways. Intel will not maintain a database that correlates processor serial numbers with any customers or users. channel.intel.com
