Action Performance may hit wall -Barron's

NEW YORK, Feb 28 (Reuters) - Action Performance Companies Inc. , which markets models cars, caps
and clothes to auto-racing fans, has set a lightning pace in recent years but its growth may be
encountering speed bumps or could even hit a wall, financial weekly Barron's reported Sunday.

The Phoenix-based company has seen its Nasdaq-listed shares race from a split-adjusted 2 in early 1996
to a late January peak of of 48.

Both sales and earnings have zoomed ahead as the company carried out 14 acquisitions and the National
Association of Stock Car Auto Racing, or Nascar as it is commonly known, became the fastest growing
spectator sport in the United States.

But signs Nascar's growth in popularity is levelling off, combined with intense competition from rivals like
Mattel Inc. , are factors that could hurt Action Performance's growth, Barron's Up & Down Wall Street
column reported.

In an interview with Barron's, Action Performance Chief Financial Officer Chris Besing said he had faith in
the company's future and a recent spate of insider selling was part of routine business.

Besing said the sales by himself, Chairman Fred Wagenhals and others had nothing to do with the late
week slide in Action Performance's stock from around 42 to 35-7/8, Barron's reported.
