Keith and all,

From CBS market watch,

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- "Grape. That means passion and magic. Cool, Rebecca."

Cool indeed. I was chatting with a friend on my new Qualcomm (QCOM) mobile phone, and she was telling me about a new Web site that offers insight into your personality based on what color Apple iMac computer you would choose.

"I'm all about tangerine," she said. "That means radiant and hot. I hear that Steve Jobs prefers strawberry: Power and strength."

We are both "trendy" and "nonconformist," my friend continued, reading from the Web site: "Tangerine, grape and lime provoke more attention and will appeal more to the 'trendies' who think of themselves as nonconformists."

Trendy but nonconformist indeed. It's a perfect description for the fine yet contradictory line that high-tech marketers are now trying to walk as they roll out what must be the most fashionable line-up of spring technology fashions yet introduced to the computer consumer world. Apple's iMac computer, selling in five fruity flavors, perhaps is the most famous example this. But in marketing computers as fashion products, Apple is far from alone.

Strolling through the typical CompUSA (CPU) or Office Depot (ODP), it can almost feel like Christmas at Macy's - - and it's only February. Here are some of my favorite offerings among this spring's geek-chic line-up.
