Model Plane???
A poster has referred to Freewing Aviation's "Scorpion" as "a model plane built in a glorified garage." May I suggest that the diligent reader will form a strikingly different opinion after reading the following article by renowned science writer Ed Regis, published in the highly acclaimed Smithsonian Air and Space magazine a few years ago.

Freewing is no longer a start-up. Its remarkable new flight technology is proven and it is currently a military contractor based on this success. This is one of the reasons it was awarded the Discover magazine's "Discover Award" for exceptional accomplishment in aviation technology.

This prize was specifically awarded, Discover said, "For development of a "freewing" aircraft design that reduces air turbulence by 75%. Planes are outfitted with a single wing that has a hinged mount to the fuselage. The freewings "surf" the wind currents rather than crashing through them. The "surfing" action reduces any turbulence a passenger experiences and reduces the chance of a stall."

I have contacted the president of Freewing and verified its relationship with DCHT. They plan to install DCHT's newly-developed (with a national laboratory) lightweight "air breathing" hydrogen fuel cells to power the avionics. And Defence Systems Daily has recently written that "This multi-phase effort will begin with replacement of existing lead-acid batteries, leading into the development of larger power systems which are necessary to support the operational loads of larger sensor (mission) packages and progressing into the possible replacement of conventional engines for propulsion."

As for the poster's description of Freewing's prototype manufacturing facility as "a glorified garage," the building used is irrelevant. Most early aircraft prototypes were built in simple sheds and the companies subsequently evolved into giant aerospace corporations.
