CATCH OF THE DAY: Honey, the TV is ringing

NEW YORK -- Day one of Jupiter's Consumer Online conference
was about "TV in the age of the Internet" and "broadband
content," which are what clever analysts are saying today
instead of "convergence."

Right after a group of panelists agreed that the future of
the Net would be about "Content, Communications, and
Commerce," NCI and US West introduced a new 3-C convergence
play: a cable box (for content) with both a Web browser
(commerce) and a standard analog phone (communications) in
it. Nobody knows whether the TV can gain significant share
against the PC as the convergence platform in the home. But
if you ask me, the PC has largely failed as an integration
platform for home telephony, and the TV has an excellent
chance of taking over leadership in this market.

Furthermore, the TV/phone may represent an entirely new
platform for "convergence" services -- though I leave the
precise nature of those services as an exercise for the
reader.
